In 2016, Dr. Sally Smith took a call from the pediatric emergency room at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital located in St. Petersburg, Florida. During that time, Kowalski was admitted for abdominal pain.
Maya’s parents had told the hospital that Maya suffered from a neurological disorder. They said that Kowalski was acutely sensitive to impulses of all kinds and that disabling pain shone through her legs and feet, requiring the use of a wheelchair.
Further, the young girl spent 24 hours in the intensive-care unit at All Children’s, screaming and squirming. When a nurse tried to conduct an ultrasound, her mom insisted that Maya could only tolerate the contact if she received an infusion of ketamine.
On the other hand, her mother, Beata, was described as being pushy in requesting the doctors to prescribe more ketamine. This led Dr. Smith to carry out an investigation.
