Following the remarkable international success of his Sincopat debut with Latin Light EP back in 2019, Argentina-born, Berlin-based producer Los Cabra now makes his eagerly anticipated return to the esteemed Spanish imprint, as he teams up with fellow countryman and previous collaborator Tomy Wahl for the pair’s stunning new two-track offering, White Nonsense EP. Reuniting for their first collaborative outing since the July 2022 release of their Siolim EP on Rebellion der Traumer, Tomy Wahl and Los Cabra’s White Nonsense EP delivers everything we’ve come to expect and more from the two in-form producers, who have been going from strength to strength with each passing release over the past few years.
With early support already in from the likes of Tale of Us, Fideles, Oostil and The Element, the double-sided journey begins with the gripping title track White Nonsense; a veritable sonic feast combining powerful bass, stunning synths and an unexpected main break that’ll leave audiences and listeners speechless. On the flip is Roboticsoul, a rousing peak-time cut that commands attention from start to finish; its hypnotic bass and ethereal vocals transporting us to a dimension where time and space cease to exist. We caught up with Los Cabra to find out more…
Congratulations on the release of your White Nonsense EP with Tomy Wahl. Can you tell us a bit about the creative process behind this collaboration? How did you and Tomy work together to bring these tracks to life?
Although we’re both from Argentina, our usual meeting spot is Goa, India, where we normally tour once per year. We´ve been working remotely for the past two years, but last winter, we managed to be in the same place at the same time.
First we spoke about the concept, mood and style that we wanted to explore together; our shared vision or idea for the project. Then, we drew some sketches to establish a common ground and ensure we were on the same page.
Still, we really enjoyed the experimentation and stepping out of our comfort zones. We tried a bunch of different production techniques, sound design approaches & musical structures to push the boundaries of our individual styles and create something unique.
The title track of the EP, “White Nonsense,” has already been receiving early support from notable artists. Can you give us some insight into the inspiration behind this track and what listeners can expect when they dive into it?
The inspiration, if I´m 100% honest with you, was to be confirmation to be the headliners of a massive party in Goa – India, “The White party” at Marbella
(more than 5000 people). We wanted to create something powerful, rusty, dodgy, but at the same time, with a few but concrete elements.
Listeners can expect a captivating blend of ethereal melodies, deep grooves, and immersive gated synths that transport them to a transcendent musical journey.
“Roboticsoul,” the second track on the EP, has been described as a peak-time cut that commands attention from start to finish. Could you share with us the concept behind this track and what elements make it stand out from your previous works?
The concept was first of all to be a good “B side” on the EP. But… who knows, maybe this turns to be the people´s first choice. Elements: as before, a few but concrete sounds. Quite a stompy consistent electrifying groove, relentless energy and modulation on the synth, a glimpse of the vocal helps to bring some “humanity” to the final arrangement.
It’s great to see you and Tomy Wahl collaborating once again after your previous release, Siolim EP. How has your creative dynamic evolved since then, and what new elements did you bring to the table for the White Nonsense EP?
I think we changed a lot in the past few years, we are not trying to follow the trends but, after doing similar sounds for a while, it was the right time for a change.
Before we were more percussive, afro-ish but still trippy, maybe focusing on different kind of dancefloors. On this ep and some others that we have on the pipeline, we tried a “big room” sound, different EQ, focusing on the quality of the elements more than filling up gaps with more. The incredible Mix and Master from Pobla made a huge different on the final result.
In your comment about the release, you mentioned that both of your worlds shine through in this EP. Could you elaborate on the specific elements that represent your solo productions and how they blend together to create a cohesive sound?
Sure! On my end, I think that it has my personality on the bassline, pads, arrangement all over the song. Tomy brought the power on drums / gated synth / fills.
As an Argentina-born, Berlin-based producer, how do you think your cultural background influences your music and your approach to production? Do you find yourself drawing inspiration from both environments?
My style is an amalgamation of both of my worlds, reflecting the multicultural aspects of my upbringing and the diverse experiences I’ve had throughout my journey. Not only from those 2, also my past 10 years coming and going to India.
I strive to create immersive and emotionally captivating musical experiences that resonate with listeners on a profound level. Exploring new sonic landscapes, experimenting with different textures and rhythms, and blending unexpected elements are all vital aspects of my approach. By pushing boundaries and challenging traditional notions of genre, I strive to create an immersive and authentic sonic experience.
The EP is released via Sincopat, an esteemed Spanish imprint. What drew you to collaborate with Sincopat for this project, and how does it feel to be part of their roster once again?
When Marc (AFFKT – Sincopat´s owner) came to India, we managed to spend dinner & some time together. When I saw him playing, I realized that the sound that we were producing was not that far away from what I was hearing, after I told him that, he requested some demos and that turned into this EP.
To be back on Sincopat is also super cool, as I´m playing regularly their releases but unfortunately, for a couple of years, as they changed their sound a bit, I was not fitting 100% on it. My last EP on the label had a huge impact on my career as Tale of Us and many other big names on the industry start playing “Latin Light” at the time. Having those videos with “oceans” of people brought international recognition and a spotlight to “Los Cabra” project.
With the international success of your Sincopat debut, ATUEL EP, back in 2019, how do you feel your sound has evolved since then? Are there any specific directions or influences you’ve been exploring recently?
The sound changed, I would say 40%, before it had more melodic elements, chord progressions and subtle Latin percussions. Now it´s more “in your face”, rusty, dodgy, straight to the point. On the other hand, I´ve been exploring downtempo (since a while). Every year that I get older, is 1 less bpm that I need J LOL.
You mentioned that you and Tomy Wahl have a routine of getting into the studio every day. How does this consistent workflow affect your creative process, and what advantages do you think it brings to your collaborative projects?
We developed a nice routine of getting into the studio every day (after the gym and before running on the beach on the afternoon). It´s not easy for touring artists to be alone in distant countries, without the support of family or the usual friends that we have around constantly.
Having this time (not only in the studio) it gives you more space & freedom to evolve ideas, without rushing for results. In a way I understood how bands in the past were taking long time to work on Albums, considering the process as the goal and the result as the consequence. We are delighted with the results!
